Intuitive Artist: 10 Signs You’re One (and How to Embrace It)

Sue Maistro August 2, 2025

Have you ever felt that your art comes from a deeper place, one that’s hard to put into words? That sometimes you simply know what to do, even without a plan, as if your hand is being guided by something invisible? You’re not alone, chances are, you’re an intuitive artist.

Being an intuitive artist isn’t about technical perfection, but about expanded sensitivity, inner listening, and an authentic connection with your own feelings. Below are ten signs to help you recognise if this is your creative path and tips on how to embrace this energy without fear.

1. You feel the urge to create without any prior planning

Inspiration catches you by surprise and you rarely make detailed sketches. Creation happens spontaneously and organically—sometimes you only see what you’ve made after you’ve finished.

2. Your creative process changes with your mood

Every piece is influenced by your emotional state. Your art directly reflects what you feel in the moment, without filters.

3. You notice recurring messages, symbols, or themes without intending to

Colours, shapes, and elements appear repeatedly in your work, as if coming from a mysterious source.

4. Music, the environment, or silence directly affect your creative flow

You feel the need to adjust your surroundings to access your intuitive creativity.

5. You simply know when a piece is ‘finished’—even if you can’t explain why

The feeling of completion is an internal certainty, a gentle knowing in your chest.

6. Mistakes become creative pathways

What seemed like an error becomes a central element of your work—you allow yourself to experiment and improvise.

7. Your creative process relaxes you or puts you in a ‘flow’ state

Time passes differently when you’re creating—you may forget to eat, check your phone, or notice what’s happening around you.

8. You feel your art is an extension of your soul

It feels as if something greater is being communicated—your work ‘speaks’ about you in ways words cannot.

9. People compliment your art for its ‘energy’ or the ‘feeling’ it conveys

Even if you can’t explain it, others notice a kind of magnetism or vivid emotion in what you create.

10. You seek authenticity over approval

Your priority isn’t to please, but to stay true to your own voice, even if that means being different or misunderstood.

My experience as an intuitive artist

I am an intuitive artist, though it took me years to realise it. All my creative work has always been influenced by my emotions and often expresses parts of my life story. I rarely plan a piece before I start. I simply feel an almost physiological need to paint, and suddenly I find myself in front of a canvas, painting shapes and colours, without really knowing how it will turn out.

Usually, I place a blank canvas on the easel and look at it for a while—I let it become part of my daily life. Sometimes, days go by with the canvas simply present, waiting for me… and when the moment arrives, I stop everything I’m doing and just start to paint.

Strangely, sometimes I feel I don’t have a defined style (even though people easily recognise my use of colour palettes, lines, and shapes—even in my florals), because I paint so many different things, with varied colours, styles, and forms. I am not an artist who only makes abstract or only realism. I move between whatever techniques call me. I might do abstract, then suddenly flowers, then women, then I’m working in watercolour or acrylic… I mix paints. There’s no planned process, though I do have an intuitive one. There’s a lot of flow. And when I finish a painting, I just know it’s done—even with its imperfections. I believe some imperfections are part of the artistic work; they reveal our humanity, blended with talent, study, and of course, a touch of the Divine that lives in each of us.

I have learned to love my artistic way of being, and I hope you feel the same about yourself.

How to embrace your intuitive art

  • Practise inner listening: set aside silent moments to feel before creating.

  • Try new materials and techniques, unafraid of mistakes.

  • Keep a visual journal: record sensations, ideas, dreams, or recurring symbols.

  • Share your art, even if it doesn’t follow trends authenticity draws the right audience.

  • Take care of your energy: seek environments, music, people, and practices that nourish your feelings.
